There is a considerable difference between geese and ducks. Most people only think of geese as majestic animals that fly in a gorgeous “V” in the sky. It is a beautiful sight to say the least.

However, while they look incredibly beautiful while they are flying in a gorgeous pattern in the sky, you should know that their beauty is primarily limited to their looks and mannerisms. If you see geese close by, it might be a wise idea to stay away.

It’s a great thing to watch geese soaring above the skies but dealing with them on a property or a piece of land is a completely different ballgame. They can cause so many issues that you might find it difficult to keep them away.

A flock of geese, if they take over your property, are going to fight, poop, and make noises throughout the course of the day. If you have a beautiful pond on your property, you might as well kiss the calm and peaceful aesthetic goodbye.

Creating a Pond

Creating a pond in your backyard or your garden requires a considerable amount of commitment, time, and effort. You will have to spend a great deal of money to build a pond as well.

Not only does a pond add considerably to the aesthetic, but it also improves the outlook of the property. You can put some fish in the pond, and even create an artificial waterfall.

It’s a great way to create a pleasing aesthetic where you can just relax and spend your time outdoors. However, if you have geese flocking by, things are going to get really ugly.

What Problems Can Geese Cause?

Before we talk about how to get rid of geese altogether, it’s important to discuss just how many problems geese can cause. Geese and other waterfowl, such as swans and ducks, can include a range of different species.

But, you should know that the most prominent species you are going to come across is the Canada geese. They are quite easy to identify because they have grayish-brown bodies, and usually have slender, long necks.

These animals tend to mate throughout their life, and they are also quite social. Perhaps the biggest reason why they are such a problem is because they tend to spend a great deal of time in larger groups.

Canadian geese like to move around in groups, so they can cause serious trouble in your life. They are quite social creatures, and if you see a couple of geese around your house, you should know that it won’t be long before you have a dozen geese on your property.

Canada Geese are going to migrate on an annual basis, and they continue to move between locations. They have a pretty robust desire to mate, and they usually give birth in the same area that they are born.

Basically, what this means is that you can’t expect your problem to go away on its own. Essentially, this problem isn’t going to be eliminated over time even if you move.

When you take into account the fact that they can live for up to 25 years, it’s pretty easy to see that geese can turn into a permanent problem. Now that you know that they aren’t going away any time soon, let’s take a look at some of the major problems that they can cause.

Overgrazing

If you have a beautiful garden around your pond, you might as well forget that whole thing if geese invade your property. They are going to start grazing and will completely overgraze the entire area.

Before you know it, the whole space will be utterly barren and lifeless. There have been cases where geese have overgrazed entire golf courses and parks, so a small garden beside a pond is of little importance to them.

You will have to spend thousands of dollars in reseeding the whole area and then growing new grass. The damage caused by these animals is too steep.

More importantly, you should know that reseeding isn’t a permanent solution either, because as mentioned above, the geese will simply return to your property after a while, and they will start grazing again. You can expect the exact same thing to happen again and again on a yearly basis.

Aggression

When we talk about the problems caused by geese, it’s hard to ignore their aggressive traits. During their mating season, geese are incredibly aggressive, and they are quite protective of their young ones.

The adult geese are going to flap their wings if you come too close, and they are going to chase you, your pets, and virtually anything or anyone that comes too close. If they consider the pond area their property, they are going to defend it as much as they can.

If you like to spend some time near the pond and have built the space lovingly, you are going to have a hard time staying there for a bit. If you have people around, the geese are simply going to scare them away.

Their aggression can go to such an extent that you are going to have a hard time simply getting out of the house and spending a few moments in your backyard. Every time you come out, they are going to come after you.

Waste

Perhaps the biggest reason why geese are such a problem is because of the sheer amount of waste that they produce. Unlike most other birds that have tiny droppings, geese have large, messy droppings.

More importantly, the smell produced by their droppings is just too much to handle. The rotten smell can easily spread around for hundreds of yards, and this can make staying in the house, or outside, very difficult.

You are going to have a hard time cleaning up the waste on a regular basis, especially with the geese coming after you. The only plausible option is to get rid of them.

How to Get Rid of the Geese Near Your Pond and Keep Them Away

Keeping a flock of geese away from your pond is not going to be easy. However, it’s also not impossible. There are a series of different methods and techniques that you can try to keep them away.

1 – Visual and Audio Decoys

Perhaps the best way to get rid of geese from your garden and your pond is to make use of a variety of visual and audio decoys. Remember, not all birds are going to be deterred by the use of visual and audio decoys.

However, there have been proven cases where decoys have managed to deter large flocks with ease. A range of visual deterrents can be used, either individually or in tandem, to get rid of the geese.

Then, you also have audio deterrents. They also work just as well, and the sounds they make are going to alarm the geese and keep them away.

There are solar powered options that can be activated via motion, so you don’t have to worry about them blaring out all the time. There are many ultrasonic variants as well that can deter the geese without causing any problems for you.

2 – Liquid Repellents

Perhaps one of the best options available to you is to make use of a liquid repellent. Before you buy one, it is important that you go through the reviews and ratings, and it’s also important that you only buy an EPA-approved repellent.

They contain a harmless ingredient that’s known as geese abhor. The ingredient is known to deter geese away, because they do not like to eat, nest, or even mate when this ingredient is nearby.

It is completely safe to use, and you can easily apply the repellent near the yard. It doesn’t have any bad odor, and you don’t even need to worry about the repellent washing away.

Again, perhaps the best thing is that you don’t have to worry about smelling something bad to keep the geese away. You won’t even know that it’s there in the first place!

3 – Nets

If you really want to protect the area, a wise move would be to install wiring or nets all around. The nets and wiring will make it exceptionally hard for the geese to walk around, and if you prefer, you can also place that net over the pond.

They won’t be able to swim in the pond, and they won’t be able to walk on the flat surface either. Before long, the geese are going to get so frustrated that they will simply migrate to another place.

4 – Get a Dog

A border collie is perhaps one of the most effective dogs that can keep Canada geese away from your property. For them, it’s just a game, but for a goose to have a dog running after it at full speed is nothing short of terrifying.

They aren’t going to stick around for very long and will move to other locations!

The coyote decoy didn’t work! Waste of money. I even moved it every day. I chase geese literally at least 6 times a week from our farm and ponds. That’s the only thing that’s helped. Relentless creatures
