If you want to create the perfect lawn with properly cut grass, you will want to make sure that you take maintenance seriously. Unfortunately, most people don’t know much about caring for their grass and do not make proper watering schedules.

If you have an empty patch of grass, buying some grass seed and spreading it around all over the surface is a wise idea. But, if you have seeded the lawn and are now looking to grow the grass properly, you need to understand the importance of watering the whole area.

There is a separate planting regimen that you need to follow when it comes to watering new grass seed, so it’s important that you understand the basics of watering the plants properly.

Before you decide to cast out the new grass seed on your lawn, it’s imperative that you begin with the watering. The way nature works is that the seeds are supposed to respond to moisture.

So, if you have planted seeds in dry land, it’s really not going to do much at all. Instead, what you need to do is water the grass seed as carefully as possible to ensure that the germination process begins. Otherwise, the seeds aren’t going to grow in a healthy fashion at all.

There are several important things that you need to do when it comes to watering the grass seed. Here are some simple points.

Start Watering a Few Days Before

Several days before you plan on planting the new seeds, you have to first water the area to a depth of around eight inches. This is important and will inject much-needed moisture into the ground.

If you are confused about how to measure the depth of the water penetration, there is actually a pretty simple process that you can follow. First, take a long screwdriver and then insert it within the ground.

If the screwdriver goes all the way to eight inches without any resistance, you are doing it right. The water saturation is not something that you need to worry about in this instance.

However, if you encounter serious resistance when pushing down the screwdriver, you will have to water the plant all over again. This is a great way to ensure that the ground is properly watered before you put the seeds in.

Water the Seeds After Planting

Once you have planted the new seeds in the ground, you need to water the grass seeds for around 10 minutes to ensure that the first few inches of the ground becomes gently moist.

This will also ensure that water penetrates at least the first several inches of the soil with ease. Once you have planted the seeds and watered them, you will want to make sure that you maintain the moisture on a consistent basis.

Remember, if you allow the seeds to dry out, they are simply going to die. Most people often spread out lots of grass seed on the ground, and only later realize that a very little amount has actually grown.

That’s simply because most of the grass seed dies due to a lack of moisture and care. This is of critical importance and you need to make sure that you keep the ground properly moistened.

The frequency with which you need to water your grass seed will vary depending on the temperature in your area. For instance, if your area receives lots of rainfall, you won’t have to water the plants regularly.

If you are not getting any rainfall, you will want to make sure that the grass seed is watered at least twice in a day. This will ensure that at least the top two inches of the soil remains moist all around.

What’s the Purpose Behind Watering New Seeds?

Simply throwing tons of water on a new lawn isn’t going to do the trick. If you have just installed a new lawn sprinkler that produces lots of water, you might not be doing it right.

Watering the new grass seed excessively has its own risks. For instance, there is the risk that the seed is going to wash away or float into clumped or bare spot soil.

Similarly, there is also the chance that the seed is going to stick to your muddy shoes when you move the sprinkler. Then, you should know that the soft sinking soil can prove to be a mess, as it will leave a trail of footprints all over your lawn. Who wants that?

So, it’s not just about producing excessive amounts of water to wash away the soil. But, you can’t skimp on the water consumption either; it’s important that the ground receives an adequate amount of water to allow the seeds to germinate.

Important Factors to Consider

All kinds of seeds require a considerable amount of moisture to grow, and the temperature requirements must be met as well. Once the germination process begins, if the conditions change, the seeds are likely to die.

If the seed dries out, there’s no chance of survival. So, as mentioned above, your sole mission during this time is to make sure that the garden receives an appropriate amount of moisture at all times.

The commitment to watering the grass is something that you need to take into account. The germination time for conventional grass seed is generally between 5 to 30 days.

This primarily depends on the variety of grass you grow. In some cases, the procedure could be even longer. Essentially, this is the amount of time that it takes for the grass to start growing.

You have to make sure that the garden does not get too soggy, as that could prove to be a problem. Once the new grass sprouts and can be seen above the ground, you should know that the roots are also growing within the soil.

This doesn’t take very long, because the moisture under the ground will be readily accessible. Another important thing that you need to know is that the seeds are not always going to sprout at the same time.

You might notice grass at some points on the surface, and you may notice bald patches in certain other areas. That’s not something that you should worry about.

This doesn’t mean that you should stop watering the ground regularly. Until all of the planted area shows green growth, you should avoid letting it run dry.

The amount of seeds that germinate is entirely in your control, even though most people often claim that they got bad seed. That’s never the case; you just need to make sure that it doesn’t dry out.

What Time of the Day Is Best for Watering?

Ideally, the best time of the day to water your grass is during the early morning. The early morning hours from 4 a.m. until 10 a.m. are the best, as there is considerably less wind to blow the water away from the soil.

Moreover, the amount of sunlight is also considerably low, so that becomes a problem as well. Most people think that they should water the grass at night, but that’s not a wise idea. Let me explain why.

First of all, you should know that when you water the plants at the night, the cool air often prevents the water from evaporating on time.

This can cause waterlogging in the soil and prevent your plants from growing properly. More importantly, the cool breeze can also cause problems.

For starters, the cool breeze in the area will blow the water, and the seeds, along with them in the evening. By the morning, the water won’t be absorbed in the soil either.

That is one of the main reasons why the best time to water your plants is in the early morning. This is the best time because there isn’t a lot of breeze blowing and the sunlight is just moderate.

The water doesn’t evaporate too quickly, and it is also absorbed by the soil. On the other hand, the water doesn’t remain for too long in the soil either. This could eventually cause a whole array of fungal infections and problems in the soil.

How Often Should You Water?

If you have planted ordinary seeds in the soil, you should water the garden at least twice or thrice a week. Again, there is no fixed schedule that you can follow; it primarily depends on the climate in your area.

Ideally, you will want to apply a total of at least two inches of water each week so that the soil has appropriate amounts of moisture. This is beneficial in a lot of different ways, and will ensure that your plants grow quickly.

Unlike specially bred seeds that are designed to be drought tolerant, the ordinary seeds are going to dry out and die very quickly if you are not careful. That is one of the main reasons why it is important for you to take this into account.

On the other hand, if you have bought specific seeds that have been bred to be drought tolerant, you won’t have much to worry about. These seeds require 30% less water when compared with the ordinary grass seed, and can last for a greater period of time.

How to Know When Your Grass Needs Water

There are several different ways to figure out when your grass is in need of water. The first test is known as the step test, and requires you to take a step on your lawn.

Move back, and watch the grass. If it springs back right away, the grass does not need a lot of water.

On the other hand, if the grass does not spring back quickly, it is in dire need of water. The next step is to check the blades of the grass. If you look at the grass closely and see that the blades are curled, it’s a clear sign that the grass is in need of water.

Water stress is something that should be taken seriously as it could have a negative impact on your lawn.

The third and perhaps the most basic test that you can carry out is to check the color of the grass. If your grass begins to lose the green color, it is a clear sign that you need to add lots of water.

How to Check If the Grass Is Receiving Appropriate Amounts of Water

There are several tests that you can conduct to determine whether the grass is receiving the right amount of water or not.

The first test is known as the can test, and requires you to place several water gauges or cat food tins on the lawn. These cans are usually an inch high, and can be spaced apart on the lawn.

Then, you need to run the sprinkler or the irrigation system for at least 15 minutes, and see how much water is captured by these tins.

These cans essentially serve as catch basins, so they will give you a better idea about the extent to which you need to run your irrigation system. This will also make it easy for you to determine just how much water you need to supply.

This is a pretty nifty way to figure out whether certain areas of the garden are receiving more water than others.

However, that’s not all. Rain gauges are also an important way to reduce your water bill. A rain gauge will help you determine the amount of rainwater that your lawn is receiving.

If you are getting lots of rainwater throughout the season, it might not be a wise idea to keep your sprinklers running around the clock.

Then, you have advanced technology to help yourself. Sensors can be installed in the sprinklers, and some companies even manufacture sprinkler systems with smart irrigation technology.

These moisture sensors can be placed within the ground and can detect when the ground is getting too dry. As soon as they detect a lack of moisture, the sprinklers fire up and are able to water the area conveniently.

Can You End up Watering the Grass Too Much?

Yes, you should know that there is such a thing as supplying too much water to the soil. If your grass receives a lot of water, the seeds won’t be able to get access to oxygen.

As a result, they are simply going to suffocate. On the other hand, excessive amounts of moisture in the soil is going to make the pants much more susceptible to disease.

If you have other plants growing in the garden, you will notice them getting attacked by pests and fungal infections will also become quite common. It is recommended that you avoid watering the ground too much to avoid any major issues.

Auditing Sprinkler System

If you have an irrigation system like a set of sprinklers installed in your garden, it is imperative that you run a thorough inspection at least in a few years. Most people don’t do this, and rue the costs later on.

As your landscape continues to grow, there is a strong chance that the sprinkler system is going to get blocked by bushes and even larger trees. There are certain kinds of sprinkler systems that tend to apply water at a relatively fast pace.

If you notice the water running into the street, it is important that you quickly turn off the water supply. Wait at least 30 minutes for the water to absorb into the soil properly before you decide to turn on the sprinklers again.

How Long Will the Grass Seed Take to Grow?

First of all, you need to understand that growing a lush green lawn is not an overnight process. Your garden is going to require appropriate amounts of care and you will have to make sure that you properly care for the whole thing.

It is of the utmost importance that you take measures to ensure that the garden receives lots of water. That’s not all, however. You also have to make sure that you call a gardener and check for signs of pest infestations or other things.

For instance, if moles infest your garden, they are going to cause lots of damage and burrow in and out of the whole garden, leaving it completely destroyed.

More importantly, you need to adopt a proper watering technique as well. A common mistake that many people make is that they let the hose run in one section of the garden, and wait for all of the water to run throughout the ground.

Again, that’s not a good idea because the water might erode the soil considerably. Instead, using a simple sprinkler system is a great idea. They are effective and will make sure that the water is properly spread out.

These are just a few things that you should know about properly caring for the lawn and allowing the seeds to grow and cover the entire lawn properly.
