This delicious Zesty Smashed Sausage & Cheese Muffin recipe goes back to my working days at McDonald’s. While of course you can just go order them they just do not have the same flavor when you do it yourself, especially if you are using this zesty Bob Evan sausage.
This sausage & cheese muffin is probably my second favorite breakfast sandwich. It comes in second place to this Zesty Smashed Sausage Egg Muffin recipe. Luckily for me, I like to change up the flavors and bounce between different foods and flavor profiles!

- Sliced Cheese, American
How to Make Zesty Smashed Sausage & Cheese Muffins
As always, get the Blackstone Griddle fired up to a Med-High heat. I always like starting out by cleaning the top with a little bit of water and then placing a thin layer of oil down.
Once this is done, make a 1.5-2″ diameter ball with the sausage. Place the sausage on the griddle, cover it with parchment paper (this keeps your press clean and prevents the meat from sticking to it), and then smash it down and hold it for a good 5-6 seconds.
Release and set the press aside. Remove the parchment paper and set it aside (assuming you are making more than one sandwich).
While the sausage is cooking, usually another minute or two, add a little more oil for the muffins.
Give the smashed sausage a quick flip.
Open the muffins up and place them face down in the freshly laid oil. This will get them warm with a nice golden-brown color (you could also put them in a toaster if you prefer).
After a couple more minutes, the sausage should be fully cooked, and the muffins should be nice, warm, and toasty.
Flip the bottom muffin over and place the sliced American cheese on it.
Then add the smashed sausage, followed by the top of the bun. From here, you could put a dome over it for about a minute to melt the cheese, but usually by the time I get inside to eat it, it is melted enough.
Pull it, plate it, and enjoy!
