Weird and kind of gross right? Why would a beef tongue be so expensive? Many people actually love eating beef tongue. These days when it comes to a cow being butchered there is almost nothing that is wasted from the carcass.
One thing that makes a beef tongue so expensive is that there is only one per cow. It’s very little meat compared to the other amount of cuts that come out of the cow.
This simply just boils down to supply and demand in which, unfortunately, the demand is up which has caused the supply of beef tongue to go down making them more expensive.
How Is Beef Tongue Usually Prepared?
According to Wikipedia, one of the most common ways to cook beef tongue is to boil it. Prior to boiling it the beef tongue is seasoned with spices, like onion. Once the beef tongue is cooked the skin is removed in which it is then eaten.
Sometimes the beef tongue cooking process continues after being boiled. After boiling it in hot water many also roast the beef tongue. In roasting the beef tongue drippings are also left behind in which you can create beef tongue gravy.
Another way that beef tongue is enjoyed is fresh out of a crock pot. The beef tongue is usually thrown in the crock pot until it is tender. Once complete the skin is then peeled off, sliced thing and served similar to a french dip sandwich.
What Are Some Advantages of Eating Beef Tongue?
Surprisingly, beef tongue also has quite a few advantages which makes it a consideration to put on the kitchen table from time to time. According to livestrong, eating beef cow provides quite a few vitamins, minerals and even protein.
If a 4-ounce serving of beef tongue is eaten then you have consumed about 4.6 milligrams of zinc. This goes towards about 58 percent of the daily recommended intake for zing in women and 42 percent for men.
This same 4 ounce serving of beef tongue also contains a good amount of iron. A 4 ounce beef tongue serving contains about 2.9 milligrams of iron. This goes towards about 37 percent of the daily recommended intake for women and 16 percent for men.
Beef tongue also contains quite a bit of vitamin B-12, according to livestrong. Vitamin B-12 plays a big role in the health of you nervous system which helps makes myelin that insulates your nerves. A 4 ounce serving of beef tongue delivers 3.6 micro-grams.
Beef tongue is also a great source of protein. A 4 ounce serving of beef tongue will deliver you 21.8 grams of protein. This is about 35 percent of the daily requirements. According to livestrong it also delivers great essential amino acids as well.
What Are Some Disadvantages of Eating Beef Tongue?
While beef tongue actually has quite a few advantages, as with anything, it can’t just all be advantages. Beef tongue’s have some disadvantages as well. As with any meat of this type it is super high in cholesterol and saturated fat.
Eating too much cholesterol to frequently can actually increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.

While there are a lot of advantages with a smaller amount of disadvantages, as with anything, moderation is key. If you can stomach the thought of eating a beef tongue, then there are plenty advantages in proceeding to do so as long as it is in moderation.
